This is a nice enough looking laptop backpack, but it falls very short in one particular area. It doesn’t have great protection for your laptop! My 17″ HP laptop slides nicely into the slot designed for the laptop, but the problem is that the laptop sticks out of the pouch by a little less than 1 inch. A 1 1/2″ wide strap folds over and has a velcro connection to hold the laptop in the pouch. This is all well and good, but the shortcoming is that backpack itself doesn’t have any padding at the top part of the pack. So, once you zip up the pack the only thing between the top 1″ of the exposed laptop and anything else is the thin nylon of the backpack itself. Targus should have thought a little harder about this one. Padding the uppermost part of the backpack, or providing a padded flap that folds over the laptop pouch instead of a thin nylon strap would have solved this problem.
People often put down their backpacks in an upright position, leaning it against a wall or a table leg, etc. If this pack falls over, the left or right edge of your laptop could easily be damaged as there is little protection at the top of the pack. Not so good. This one is going right back to Amazon.
The appearance, ease of use, and portability of this pack is fine. These are the 3 default rating attributes for this backpack. If “Laptop Protection” where an attribute, it would get 1 star.

Purchased for my son to use at college. There is ample room for his Laptop and the books he needs to carry.

At the Targus website, it clearly states that this bag’s “device compatibility” is 16.5″ x 12.9″ x 2.2″.
So I thought surely my new Asus G72GX 17″ would fit since it’s only 16″ x 12.25″ x 2″. But NO, the compartment for the laptop is only about 11.5″ wide. Plus like the previous reviewer stated, the laptop would stick out unprotected. I inserted my 15.6″ Asus G50VT-X1 and it sticks out by almost 2″, leaving those 2″ of the laptop with absolutely no protection.
Big disappointment!
