My fault I guess for not paying close enough attention but this Home Theather System does not come with an integrated DVD player, unlike the DAVHDX285, HDX587WC, DDX589W and other systems made by Sony and featured on Amazon. Was looking to buy a HTS and decided on a Sony system. I was looking for one with more than one HDMI imput, saw this system with it’s three HDMI imputs and was sold. Purchased it at a local retail store and was instantly surprised to find it was a receiver without the DVD player. Went back on Amazon and gave the on-line discription and custumer reviews a closer look. Sure enough no mention of a DVD player. Would have been nice if this was clearly spelled out in the product discription…NO DVD PLAYER. However went out and bought the matching Blu-ray DVD player and am very happy with the end product. Picture looks grate and it sounds grate. So over all happy with my purchase.

I was excited about this HTB, until I got it all hooked up and could not get the HDMI to output from BD or DVD. I could get my Tivo to output via the SAT input, so I checked that connection in both the BD and DVD inputs and the signal was passed through. I could hook my Sony Blu-ray player directly to TV via HDMI and it worked. The same with my Toshiba DVD player. However neither would work when I connected to the AV unit, and set to the approprate input in the interface. After a lengthy phone converstaion with Sony Support they derived that the unit was defective. So I returned for a replacement….. I got that replacement today and the same thing was happening. I called Sony support again, and though they were very helpful they also said the unit was defective. This time I’m returning for a refund.

I really regret choosing this HTB over several components I had put together in my cart. The price was good so I decided to give it a shot. It was easy to put together and the auto setup feature was neat but I ended up manually tuning each speaker. First issue was that it kept frying out the outlets on my Monster 8 outlet surge protector. It ended up killing 3 outlets, ironically labeled Amp, Main Receiver, and CD, only to like the one labeled VCR (Go figure). Second issue, the subwoofer has too much bass which would be nice if I lived in a house but my apt neighbors started banging on the floor (Volume level at 15). Even if I crank down the level on the sub only, it was still loud. Annoying to the point I unplugged the sub (The center piece was sufficient). Third issue is an odd one. Usually when I power on my PS3, the video would go out with sound playing for a good 2-3 secs. Even stranger, the video turned to snow (Effect) when I left my PS3 sitting idle for about 5 mins. I had to restart the unit to fix that. At one point I was watching a video and it went dark for 2-3 secs then showed video for a second then blacked out again. I checked the cables and even changed them out but that was no help. I can’t tell if this unit got bumped up pretty bad during shipping or it was a dud from the factory. Even when working, I’m not too impressed with the sound. The side speakers really lack power. The front and center work really nice and the sub is great, but too loud. I think I’ll have to return this and just piece something together. A shame considering that it’s really nice looking, easy to setup, and doesn’t include a dvd, cd, or blu ray.

  4. So far so good. A nice feature is that as soon as you turn off your tv and dvd, the HT goes to standby automatically

The sound on this is pretty good for the price. What Sony does not tell you is that the receiver really is not compatable with a Samsung Bluray. I am on my second receiver and it is not proccessing the signal from the Bluray. I am going to trash the Samsung and buy a Sony Bluray and I hope that will fix the problem.(Since my Samsung Bluray works fine when hooked up directly to the TV)
